То, что все три приведенных мною исследования столь различны по характеру, заставляет меня признать еще один факт: результаты, полученные при изучении черт личности исследуемого человека, частично зависят от личных целей исследователя, который сам создает экспериментальную ситуацию для своих респондентов, и то, что он получает, ограничено его целями и методами. Но этот факт не должен никоим образом разрушать нашу уверенность в том, что реальные тенденции могут быть выявлены в той степени, в какой это позволяют наши методы.

Существует целый ряд проблем, касающихся исследования черт личности, которых я не счел нужным касаться в данной работе. Среди них, например, определение различий между чертой, установкой, привычкой, чувством, потребностью и т. д. поскольку все это — внутренние тенденции того или иного типа; в данном случае я рассматриваю их всех как «черты». Также я не затрагивал вопрос о том, в какой степени черта является мотивационной, когнитивной, аффективной или экспрессивной. Наконец, со специальной оговоркой, я отказался от рассмотрения различий между общими (формальными, номотетическими) чертами, которые представлены нам влюбом стандартном профиле, и индивидуальными. чертами (личностными диспозициями), присущими только конкретному человеку (например, Дженни).
